PORTLAND, Ore. — The remote village of Ventura, Guatemala has electricity for the first time, thanks to a team of a dozen Oregon lineman and an engineer who teamed up with villagers to build power lines.

Wilsonville father and daughter help turn on the lights in Guatemalan village

Malia Case stood inside a home in the rural Guatemalan village of Ventura when the lights were turned on for the first time. The 17-year-old Wilsonville High School senior and her father, Ted Case, were there earlier this month alongside a team of 10 linemen who spent two weeks building power lines and wiring homes to bring electricity to the village.

Who We Are: Local lineman joins effort to electrify remote village

Jason Sherman is back home in Port Orford after helping electrify a remote village in Guatemala. Sherman, a line worker for Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, joined the Oregon Empowers team departing for Guatemala in early March to electrify the rural village of Ventura, a small community four hours east of Guatemala City.

Powerful Connection: OTEC employees help bring electricity to village in Guatemala

BAKER CITY, Ore. — March snow sent off three employees from Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative on their way to Guatemala, and snow welcomed them home. The employees, along with eight employees from other electric cooperatives in Oregon, traveled to Ventura, a remote village in the mountains of the Central American country, to bring electricity to the area during a three-week project.

OTEC employees to help electrify two villages in Guatemala

LA GRANDE — Travis Smart, of La Grande, and Jeff Pillow, of Union, soon will fly to Central America to help give about 100 rural residents wings in their struggle to escape poverty.

Oregon electrical workers volunteer to electrify village in Guatemala

There are things people take for granted. Like running water or working electricity.

"People rely on electricity and don't really know how much is behind just flipping the light switch on," Blachly-Lane Electric Cooperative general foreman Matt Smith said.

But on March 6, a dozen electric line-workers from around Oregon will be traveling to Guatemala to provide electricity to a remote village east of Guatemala City.
